The oldest surviving Javanese text of Mahabhrata was written in the late 10th century during the reign of KING DHARMAWANGSA, who ruled East Java from Kadiri from 985 to 1016. During the Kadiri period, literature flourished and kawawin, poems in Old Javanese language, were composed by court poets in honour of the kings and their gods. In about 1035, a section of this epic inspired the poet Mpu Kanwa to compose the very popular Arjuna Wiwaha, the Marriage of Arjuna. The large body of Old Javanese kakawin literature written at this time was the most important cultural contribution of the period. (Worshipping Siva and Buddha/Anne R.
