A fine replica of a palepai ceremonial hanging. Cotton, supplementary weft weaving, Java

$0.00

In 1975, Haji Abdul Kadir, a weaver of Pekalongan, Java, was challenged to make a copy of an old palepai ceremonial hanging from Lampung in Sumatra. He succeeded so well, using techniques akin to those of Lampung that many such imitation ship cloths have been since produced. The production of palepai and other ceremonial textiles such as tatibin and tampan ceased around the turn of the 20th century in Lampung due to a loss of prosperity which followed a decline in pepper trade, the lack of skilled weaving force resulting from the abolition of slavery in the mid-19th century and a concurrent change in marriage traditions. (Gillow/Traditional Indonesian Textiles). This fine piece in our collection was made by the late Haji Abdul Kadir.
