I purchased this fine batik wall hanging when I covered the devastating earthquake in Yogyakarta in 2006. It was heartbreaking to see the destruction inflicted by the tremor which killed more than 5,000 people. The assignment required me to visit various affected areas, hospitals, government offices and to talk to survivors. One afternoon I ended up at Tirtodipuran street near the Sultan’s palace and found out that one of the antique shops was open. The transgender owner was at the shop to assess the damage. Fortunately, it was minor and I got this mid-20th century piece, showing three wayang characters.
