While batik cloths containing Arabic calligraphy are still popular in Sumatra as ceremonial headcloths and as covers for a body prior to burial, other past uses have been mentioned. It’s been suggested the square batiks were used to cover the Qur’an or to kneel during prayers, while many of the larger rectangular cloths are likely to have been turned into headcloths. (Kerlogue/Batik Drawn in Wax-KIT). This particular piece was made in Cirebon and exported to Sumatra.
