Ritual textiles from East Timor in our collection are acquired before and after the country's independence from Indonesia. I travelled to East Timor frequently as a journalist in the late 1990s to cover political turmoil during Indonesia's often brutal occupation of the former Portuguese colony. I couldn't find antique textiles then. This piece was purchased in Bali.
