Tais Keut Bati Rarote, Timor. Warp ikat, supplementary warp wrap patterning, 2012

$1.00

Tais Keut Bati Rarote, Lo’o Neke, Timor, 2012. Warp ikat, supplementary warp wrap. Tied, dyed and woven by Veronika Maek. Commercial cotton, natural dyes, commissioned by Threads of Life. This woman’s sarong is worn for special occasions and traditional ceremonies. It was made by the weavers from the cooperative, Putri Tunggal, (women working together as one) based in Lo’o Neke, West Timor. The centerfield contains a solid section of ikat motif with the foot of the textile containing motifs using a supplementary warp wrapping technique called buna. The central motif is called Atoni Lafaek which contains the motif of the human and the crocodile. The crocodile and the human are both seen as representations of the ancestors and favors may be asked of both of these figures. Permission must be asked of the spirit of the crocodile if a weaver is going to make a crocodile motif. (Description by Threads of Life)
